Measure your ring size at home

The most accurate size always comes from a jeweller's ring sizer, but you can get a reliable result at home in two minutes with either method below.

Measuring a finger for ring size

Method 1: measure your finger

  1. Wrap.Wrap a thin strip of paper or non-stretchy string around the base of the finger the ring is for.
  2. Mark.Mark where the end meets the strip. It should be snug but still slide over your knuckle.
  3. Measure.Lay it flat and measure from the start to the mark in millimetres. This is your circumference.
  4. Match.Find the nearest circumference in the chart below. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger.

Method 2: measure a ring that fits

  1. Choose a ring.Use a ring that fits the intended finger well. Make sure it is round, not bent.
  2. Measure the inside.Measure straight across the inside of the ring, edge to edge, in millimetres. This is the inner diameter.
  3. Match.Find the nearest inner diameter in the chart below.

Tips for the most accurate fit

Fingers change size through the day and with temperature. These small habits make a big difference.

Tips for measuring ring size
TimingMeasure at the end of the dayFingers are slightly larger in the evening, which gives the most comfortable size.
TemperatureAvoid cold handsCold fingers shrink. Measure at normal room temperature, not after being outdoors.
KnucklesCheck the knuckleThe ring must slide over your knuckle. If your knuckle is larger, size for it.
WidthWide bands fit tighterFor bands wider than 4 mm, consider going up a quarter to half a size.
HandsEach hand is differentYour dominant hand is often slightly larger. Measure the exact finger the ring is for.
StackingPlan for a wedding bandEngagement rings and wedding bands are usually the same size, worn together.

06Questions

Questions about ring size

What if I order the wrong size?

Resizing up to 3.5 sizes up or down is free within 15 days of delivery. From day 16 up to one year, resizing costs 15% of the purchase price. Shipping charges apply. Contact us first to arrange it.

Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?

Choose the larger size. A ring that is slightly loose is comfortable and easy to adjust; one that is too tight may not pass the knuckle.

Can every ring be resized?

Most rings can. Eternity bands, with diamonds set all the way around, cannot be resized because the stones would need to be reset. Contact us and we will advise on the options for your piece.

What is the most common engagement ring size?

In the USA and Canada most women wear between size 5 and 7, with 6 to 6.5 the most common. Most men wear between size 8 and 11.

Are US and Canadian ring sizes the same?

Yes. Canada uses the same numbered sizes as the USA. Use the chart above to convert from UK, Australian or European sizes.

Do wider bands need a bigger size?

Often, yes. Bands wider than about 4 mm cover more of the finger and feel tighter, so many people go up a quarter to half a size.

Can you help me find my size?

Yes. Send us a photo of your measurement or the ring you are comparing with, and we will help you choose. Contact us at support@civiajewels.com or +1 (437) 422-1187.
